Image Annotation

muse

Here is an image of British rock band Muse. From this image you can clearly see the style of the band and the kind of look they want to give off about their band. The look i can see is a smart-casual type of look where they are wearing quite smart blazers with casual t-shirts underneath. Their hair is not wacky and out there it is quite normal of what we see of most bands today with two of the band members having relatively long hair and the bassist on the left being of the much shorter hair variety. This gives off that the band itself is quite chilled but intelligently thought out music. from this you can also see that the band members are quite serious but the band member on the left is giving a smile suggesting a more relaxed feel to the band, this could show that they are friendly and are all friends with each other or that they love the music that they play and are happily passionate about the things they do as a band together. Over all this is the type of style i think that we would undertake in our music video as we are making a music video for the same genre of music and Muse are very big and have a huge fan following of their music and style.

Lyric Annotation

Here are the lyrics for our chosen song Learnt my Lesson Well by the Kaiser Chiefs. We have taken an amplification approach towards these lyrics by thinking of the underlying meaning behind them and creating a narrative out of it for the lyrics meaning to be amplified by the narrative we put it to.

Song Choice

Our chosen song is "Learn My Lesson" Well by Kaiser Chiefs.

This song was chosen because we believe that it would be quite easy to learn the lyrics to the song for easy lip syncing. The instruments are heard quite easily and will be easy to mimic with instruments in the video. The music is conventional to the genre we want to do for our music video as its quite fast paced sounds very rocky with electric guitars and drums being played with a electric bass guitar.

The genre of this song is indie rock which is good because we wanted to do a rock type song.

The initial idea behind choosing this song is that it follows convention very well to what we want for a rock song. This means it will be easy for us to create a good music video that amplifies the lyrics meaning and put a possible narrative. we saw this in our lyrics annotation of the song.

The type of clothing that would be worn for this type of music video would be skinny jeans and a shirt or a full suit and sometimes even a blazer, skinny jeans a tie and shirt.

role photos

These are the roles that we have found that need to be filled by our group to be able to make this music video. We have particular roles like Director, Camera Man, Sound, Mise-en-Scene and Editor these roles are to do with the actual creation of the music video and these particular people are responsible for these things so it is up to them to make them right. The other roles are to do with the performance in the music like Guitarist, performer and Singer. I have taken the role of Camera Man, Editing and a Performer as well as Mise-En-Scene. With these roles i must help to film the footage and to help set up the shots to look good as well as perform in the shots that i am supposed to be in to

Example Questionnaires

Results from Questionaires

The charts here show the average age, ethnicity, favorite genre of music and popular rock artists among other results. Almost all the ages of the people who took our surveys are 16-20 and are of white British decent. This is important to us since this is our target audience we want to aim for. 50% of the people we asked if they liked rock music answered yes which is good because we have a relatively large audience to entertain with the music video but also means there is a specific style that the music videos will follow.

Quite a few people said they do listen to British rock artists. We also found out some of the popular artists to help us narrow down a choice for our song. Another thing we found that a lot of people expect there to be a lot of leather being worn in rock music videos along side skinny jeans. Rock music videos have been shown to take place in isolated areas and dark places we found this from our questionnaires which will help us narrow down a few specific places to film, upon this we also found that a majority of people believe that there should be a dark feeling to rock music videos. People also expect there to be typical band instruments seen in the video like electric guitars, drums, bass guitars and a singer with a microphone.

Advert and CD cover analysis

Here is a powerpoint analysis of three album adverts and 3 album CD covers.

Genre Music Video Analysis 3

Blur - Song 2

Sound

The sound for this Rock music video is again all about the song where the only sound is that of the song. This makes the whole video about the song and the lyrics being sung. There is no other sound in the video apart from the music which in this case is diegetic sound. You can see this from the video above.

Cinematography

The cinematography for this music video is very still and static. There is barely any camera movements as all of the shots are static shots of close ups and mid shots and wide shots of the band which is quite conventional. The only thing that is not very conventional is the fact there are no camera movements to match the upbeat nature of the song which doesn't help the audience get as engaged as they could be with the song and video. You can see this in the tube chop below.

Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene for the music video is very casual and is quite conventional for a rock video where the performers would usually be dressed quite excessively or they would be dressed quite casually as if they are playing a small gig. The performers in this video are dressed quite casually and are in quite a small vintage looking room with old vintage type wallpaper. This shows that the video is souly based on the song rather than a flashy video. The lighting for this video is quite low key as the lights are on and off different places with there being dark spots around the room and when the band starts playing the lights flicker on and off. You can see this from the short tube chop below.

Editing

The editing for this video is quite unconventional as at the beginning it starts of cutting to the beat at quite a fast pace and for that it is faster paced than the tempo of the song. Then as the song moves on and goes through different parts of the song the editing rarely changes and doesn't slow as much or even speed up making it quite an unconventional piece.

Genre Music Video Analysis 2

Bullet for my Valentine - Tears Don't Fall

Sound

The sound in this again is quite conventional to the genre. The sound is all bout the song and the band playing the song against a silent narrative. The sound is diegetic at points but non diegetic when the narrative is playing it is only diegetic when the band is seen playing the song. This can been seen in the tube chop below.

Cinematography

The cinematography for this music video is quite erratic as during the silent narrative the camera movements are quite normal and are kept steady like they would be in a film. When there are shots of the band and the music is quite heavy with some screaming then the camera is shaking violently giving off the impression that the song is a violent song. There is also a blue filter used without the whole of the band shots and the narrative. This gives the video a cold feel to it making it seem very dark and emo. This can be seen in the tubechop below.

Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene for the piece is very dark and Gothic. There is a use of dark leathery clothing giving off a gruff and mean type of look making the band seem tough and of the violent sort. This attracts an emo/gothic type of audience to the video. There is also quite a Rustic feeling to the video of things being old and worn out. During the scenes with the band there is heavy rainfall on them which could relate to one of the lyrics and the name of the song of "Tears don't fall" which is juxtaposed in these scenes as the rain is falling. This can be seen in the tubechop below.

Editing

The editing for the music video is quite conventional as it sticks to the beat of the song but also changes its pace as the song does but there are a few moments where it cuts quite fast and is a bit faster than the song is going. There is constant cross cutting between the narrative and the band performing the song. This gives more of a meaning towards the lyrics of the song through imagery of the narrative.

Genre Music Video Analysis 1

Muse - Uprising

Sound

The sound for this music video is quite conventional for this genre of music video. With rock videos its usually all bout the song or is a mix of song and narrative. This one is all about the song but has a silent sort of narrative playing in the back. There sound is Diegetic as it is the band who is playing it in the scenes shown below.

Cinematography

The cinematography for this video is good as it isn't too erratic for people to understand what is going on but the tracking movements in the video are quite slow so it matches the pace of the song making the video feel quite soft and calm. This is a bit juxtaposed as the music is rock genre and you would expect it to be a bit more lively with the music that is playing. The shots are quite conventional since there are wide and close shots of the band and the band members. This is all shown in the tube chop. --->

Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene for the video is very dark, there is a use of low key lighting and dark costumes used which give the video quite a dark and eerie feel about it. This is done to reflect the quite morbid feel of the song how it is quite slow at first and notes are dragged out combined with the slow tracking movements gives off a very dark and eerie feel to the music video. You can see this in the tube chop below.

Editing

The editing for the piece is quite conventional since it follows the beat of the song and is quite slow at the start of the song when the song is quite slow. Then it speeds up along with the song but the camera movements do not speed up. This is good as it keeps the audience entranced in the video as they can follow it as they follow the song easily. You can clearly see this in the lengthy tube chop below.

Low Budget Ideas

A-Ha! - Imogen Heap

Mise-En-Scene

In this music video the lighting is quite dark, this gives off a dark feel for the music video and attracts a teenager "Emo" style of audience. This is also achieved with the use of blood and gungy type images shown in the music video. The presentation of the mise-en-scene is very good as it helps the video in being successful in a conventional way as well as attracting the right audience. This is what i will try to do with my music video so i can entertain the right audience that like this music.

Cinematography

The cinematography for the music video is quite conventional with there being quite a lot of close ups and mid shots of the artist and shots which relate into the lyrics of the song. I feel i can create something that is more creative than this as i think that the cinematography lacks movements and a variety of camera angles and shot types.

Editing

The editing is relatively fast paced as is any music video with a faster tempo song to accompany it. I choose to follow the beat of my song and try to cut on beat so that people find it easier to get into the feel of the music video like this music video does, i will use quite fast paced editing.

Sound

The sound in the video is all non-diegetic sound which is good as we can clearly hear the artist singing which is probably the main reason why someone would watch the video for the song and a further understanding of the lyrics and the possible story being sung in the lyrics of the song. With my genre i will possibly use a mixture of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds so i have a small narrative to my music video as well as the song being played and performed by the band.

Andrew Goodwins Theory of Music Videos

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin through his research had come up with a theory that there are three different types of music videos this is what he found:

Illustration:

Illustration music videos are the type of videos where the editing cuts on beat with the music. The literal meaning is also illustrated through the imagery represented through the video. There are also shots of the band performing the song that is being played which is all very conventional and lives up to the expectation.
a good example of this is Owl City - Fireflies.

Amplification:

An amplification music video is where the film cuts on both on and off beat (Only sometimes) to emphasize features but the images do not directly relate to the songs lyrics but amplify the lyrics meaning. A good example of this is Coldplay – Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.

Disjuncture:

A disjuncture music video is where the video will usually cut off beat to the song and will not follow the conventional means of music videos. The images do not relate the lyrics in anyway. This type of music video is usually used by well known artists who are very well established. A good example of this is Red Hot Chili Peppers - Cant Stop.

Carol Vernallis' Theory of Editing

Carol Vernallis
Carol Vernallis has analysed the editing in music videos and Hollywood films. Through this she identified a distinct approach to each of these. She then found these ways of approaching editing:

Hollywood Film:

  • There is a unity of space time shown through the film.
  • There is a clear order of shots of continuity which draws the audience in.
  • The order of the shots makes the film conventional to the piece.
  • Within Hollywood film there is a clear distinct path.

Music Video

  • The order of the shots in a music video are unconventional of that of a Hollywood film, there is no type of conventional order of shots to follow as the video will shift much more freely between shots.
  • There are also visual hooks to create continuity where a single shot is linked to another through a single feature I.E. Shape or a colour.
  • In music videos Vernallis noticed a multiplicity of incomplete events sometimes obscure paths in the story.
  • Pop videos draw the audience away from the narrative by foregrounding structures to create discontinuity.
  • The time, space, character and narrative are revealed in completely not like they would be revealed within a film.

Analysis of a rock video 2

Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out

Sound

The sound for the music video is the song Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. There is no Non-Diegetic sound in the video as the video consists of the band playing the song so the sound is diegetic through the video. This makes the video seem based purely on the song and the images that accompany are directly related to the song.

Editing

The editing for the music video is fast paced to match the tempo of the song and is cut on beat to the song, especially at a particular point of the song you can see that the music video is cut right on beat and goes through shots that directly relate to the beat like a foot tapping on the floor on beat to the song. This makes the song and the video feel very energetic which makes the audience enjoy the video regardless of the footage in the video.

Cinematography

There are a lot of camera movements used in the music video like tracking towards the band members as they play the song and there are also a lot of static shots that have no movements and are mainly close ups of imagery of band members playing their respective instruments or the singer. These give a feel to the music video that it is quite an energetic song and that the video wants people to move and dance to the song by invoking the movement through the tracking shots. The close ups are also used to show who the band members are clearly to the audience. You can see this in the Tube Chop below.

Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene for this music video is very strange as everything seems to be in the format of flat 2D paper clippings some having a blotchy type of comic book effect over them and sometimes their faces mixed with another picture of an object and at one point their bodies being replaced completely with robotic and skeleton looking bodies. None of the imagery seen in the video relates to the song lyrics in any way making it seem very separated from the imagery. You can see these in the screen captures below.

Rock Mood Board

This is my groups rock mood board. From this we can see the different types of outfits that people in rock bands wear and the type of iconography that is shown with the typical rock bands with a symbol being made out of your hand to represent rock as well as skulls and instruments such as guitars and drums as well as bass guitars.

Conventions of a Music Video

The conventions of a music video will usually consist of Performance, Narrative, Mixture, Cameo, Animation, Props, Costumes, Locations, Hair and Makeup, Jump cuts and Shots. Some of these things arent always included together.

Narrative: The story that accompanys the music video, often the meaning behind the lyrics.

Mixture: A combination of performance and narrative.

Cameo: This is when the artist is shown as a character and is not the artists or singer of the band.

Animation: This when when everything in the music video is animated or has some form of animation included.

Props: Every music video will include props. These are done to help the narrative become clearer and the video to seem believable.

Performance: This is to show the artists or band performing their song to show that they made it.

Costume: There will always be costumes in a music video be it for the characters acting in the narrative but also for the band to reflect the messages of their music and the narrative.

Location: Every music video has a location, there could be more than one but most will take place in one location and this location will be different depending on the type of music. There are usually more than 3 locations which change on each verse.

Hair and Make up: This is used to enhance the look of the artists or band and even the characters in the narrative to help attract a particular type of audience.

Jump cuts: These are often put in to either match the beat of the song or for the singer to be lip synced in many locations.

Shots: The shots mainly used in pop videos would be close ups and medium shots of the artist, in rock videos would be wide medium and close shots of the band members, to show them lip syncing the song to show who played what instrument and who sung which lines of the song.

Analysis of a Rock Video

Finger Eleven - Paralyzer

Sound
The sound for this video starts off very quietly with the small sound of the wind blowing through an empty street and when a character enters the scene again all we can hear is the diegetic sound of the man walking. Then once we have seen the singer of the band the music begins and the scene progresses, from this we know that the man on the roof is part of the band as this is when the music starts.

Cinematography

In this rock music video there is a blue filter used to make the scenes seem less colorful giving a moody type of feel to the song. There are a lot of wide and medium shots of the band together but there are also quite a few close ups of the members of the band. These are then cross cut with close ups and medium shots of a man in a suit dancing with other formally dressed people, this tells the audience that the people can hear the music and are dancing to it shown in the Tube chop below.

Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene for this music video is very contrasting to make differences stand out which is what the song is about, where there is a man in a suit dancing with other formally dressed people and that cross cuts with the shots of the band who are wearing quite casual band clothing which shows the differences. I Think the mise-en-scene reflects the differences between people of different classes, there is also a look between the singer of the band and the man in the suit which shows there differences. You can see these in the Gif and Tube Chop below.
Look Exchange between Suited man and Singer.

Editing
The editing for the rock music video varys in its pace as in the beginning the pace starts off quite slow and very film like. Then the music starts and the cutting moves with the drum beat showing various types of buildings before coming off the drum beat and moving into a quicker pace of editing cutting between the band and the man in the suit. I think that this helps the audience get into the beat and the feel of the music by the use of a visual stimulation. This is seen below in the Gifs.

Slow Paced Editing
Drum Beat synced Editing
Speedier paced editing between Man in suit and Band.

Pop Video Analysis 1

Paramore - Still Into You

Sound

The sound in this music video is quite up beat as it is a power pop song, it features 1 singers and two of the band mates. The sound is very up beat and exciting for most viewers, this song is being sung by a woman and the lyrics are based around love and being with someone and of course still being into the after a long time. This appeals to a stereotypical teenage girl as it is seen they like romantic things which this song is about.

Mise-En-Scene

Opening Scene (Picture 1)

This is the opening Shot of the music video there is a slow track up from the frame being filled tightly with balloons before we reach this steady track towards the artists. This is good as it shows who the artists are and the audience will know straight away that these are the artists. The singer is central as she lip syncs during the music video so she is the main focus.

"Years" Lyric reflected through Birthday cakes (Picture 2)

This scene is also another good scene as it reflects the lyrics and the meaning of the song, as this part the Lyrics are sun "Cant count the years on one hand that we've been together". Being surrounded by birthday cakes reflects upon the years that they have been together and there being a lot of cakes means obviously that it has been a long time.

Cinematography

At the beginning of the music video shown in Picture 1, the frame starts off filled tightly with blue and white balloons trying to symbolize water, the camera then tracks up and forward towards the artists, the singer being central, so that the audience can see who they are closely.

Gif Showing the movements of the camera and shot types (picture 3)

There are a lot of camera movements which reflects the upbeat and quite fast paced feel of the song. There are a lot of tracks left and right which match the pace of the song. The shots are also consistently wide shots or close ups of the artists. This is done to show either shots that include all of the artists to show their friendliness and that they are all friends together sharing one shot, then the close ups show the song to be more personal to the singer than the other two artists.

Editing

The editing in the music video is quite fast paced but also changes during the music video reflected when there are time signature changes within the music video. The speed is used to reflect the mood of the song which is very happy and upbeat which makes the editing fast to make the video seem very happy and upbeat and fun. It also gives the sense that the artists are having fun singing the song and having fun together which will make the audience feel happy as it influences them to feel better with the use of an upbeat and relatively fast song combined with the fast paced editing.

Brief

The Brief for this year is to create a promotion package for the release of an album, this will involve planning and analyzing music videos as well as the creation of a magazine advertisement and a CD cover.
